With a new acute-care deployment, in addition to cloud-based migration of its ChartLogic outpatient EHR, practice management and patient portal technology, "the future of healthcare IT is in cloud-based applications," says Medsphere's CEO. Medsphere Systems Corporation is branching into cloud-based IT with the implementation of a software-as-a-service version of its OpenVista electronic health record. Launched at both the Behavioral Center of Michigan and Samaritan Behavioral Center near Detroit, the new new SaaS version of OpenVista will offer those facilities – and soon other client sites – greater accessibility while saving on the cost of onsite data centers. Read more about: Medsphere's new cloud initiative also includes physician practices using Medsphere’s ChartLogic division, which is in the process of migrating cloud-based components – ChartLogic EMR, ChartLogic PM, and the Connect Patient portal – to a browser-based platform.
Medsphere's OpenVista is a commercialized version of the VistA EHR developed by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. It uses open-source code, available via the Freedom of Information Act, enabling it to be deployed relatively quickly and affordably. OpenVista on the cloud is accessible from most commonly used platforms, including Windows, Linux, and MacOS, according to Medsphere. "Clearly, the future of healthcare IT is in cloud-based applications and SaaS models that give clinicians, staff, and patients the ability to access relevant data and functionality from anywhere,” said Medsphere CEO Irv Lichtenwald. "Even though some of our clients still prefer and are best served by onsite servers, we’re very pleased to offer web-based IT as an alternative."
